Ask the Doctor
Q. I’m 14 years old and
I still wet the bed. My doctor said I’d outgrow it,
but I have not yet. When will I?
A.
Waiting to outgrow bedwetting can last all through your life.
If you have not outgrown it by your age, the problem could
go on for years.
Q. I didn’t wet the bed until
my grandfather died. I was very sad that he died and I will
miss him. My parents say I should talk to a psychologist about
this and this will end the bedwetting problem. Should I talk
to a psychologist?
A. Talking
to a psychologist will not end the bedwetting. The sleep disorder
was always there. The stress causes by your grandfather’s
death triggered your brain to go into that deep sleep, thereby
producing the bedwetting. A psychological problem did not
cause you to wet the bed.
Q. We couldn’t go away to college
this year because of the bedwetting. Why has our doctor told
us all of these years the bedwetting would “just go
away”? -18 year old frustrated twins, Michael and David.
A.
Medical doctors don’t treat bedwetting because bedwetting
is not the result of a medical problem. We know how difficult
it has been for you all of these years, because at E.T.C.,
we have successfully treated thousands of teenagers as well
as many sets of twins.
Q. I have taken DDAVP for 5 years.
I never know if it is going to work. At sleepovers I stay
awake all night so my friends don’t learn about the
bedwetting. What am I doing wrong – please help. 15
year old girl
A. You
aren’t doing anything wrong. Unfortunately the promises
made about DDAVP bring a lot of disappointment for bedwetters.
You wet the bed because you have inherited a sleep disorder,
not because of a medical problem. We can end the bedwetting
and change the sleep disorder without using drugs.
